    What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, but it has been widely adopted in addiction treatment due to its emphasis on mindfulness, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT recognises the importance of balancing acceptance and change: clients learn to accept their experiences and emotions while simultaneously working to replace harmful behaviours with healthier alternatives.

    Core Components of DBT

    Mindfulness

Practising present‑moment awareness without judgment. Developing the ability to observe thoughts and feelings without acting on them.

    Distress Tolerance

Building resilience to cope with emotional crises without resorting to substance use. Using techniques like self‑soothing, distraction and radical acceptance.

    Emotion Regulation

Identifying and labelling emotions accurately. Learning to decrease vulnerability to intense emotions through self‑care and behavioural activation.

    Interpersonal Effectiveness

Improving communication skills to set boundaries and maintain healthy relationships. Practising assertiveness and negotiation strategies.

    DBT at Studio City Recovery

Clients at Studio City Recovery engage in DBT skills training groups and individual sessions. Therapists provide a structured curriculum that progresses through the four modules above. These skills are reinforced in group therapy and complemented by holistic activities such as yoga and meditation. For those seeking detailed information, the centre offers resources like dialectical behavior therapy, which explains how DBT principles are incorporated into treatment plans. With consistent practice, DBT empowers individuals to manage distress, navigate relationships and sustain recovery.
